Foundation of Discipleship 2 of 9

God’s Word

There are 9 parts to the foundation. Love, Faith, God’s Word, Prayer, Worship, Trust, Study, Action, and at the center is Jesus. Without the center, anything you would build on it would collapse in on itself. There are 4 corner stones that make it possible to build on and 4 side stones helping complete the foundation. All of these you must have, in order to be a successful disciple. The foundation looks like this:

God’s Word

God’s word is one of the cornerstones of discipleship. I would go further to say, it is “The Corner stone”.  Without it there would be no way to know what God wants us to do, or how to act. Through God’s word we learn to live life for and through Jesus, the center stone. The corner-stone help balance the load on the structure, just as doing these corner stones will balance your life in discipleship. With just Jesus and only one of these corner stones you can begin to build a stable structure that will start to grow, requiring the other blocks to be placed to stable it further. This corner stone is supported by Study and Action. Studying his word and putting it into action is how we learn how to become the person we are to be.

Matthew 16:18

18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

Jesus wasn’t saying Peter was going to be the focus of the church. That is why he said I will build my church. Jesus was saying that the word of God would come through him, and those words would reach an untold amount of people. Peter was only the conduit for God’s word to reach the world. He wrote 2 books in the Bible, as well as preached the “good news” throughout the land. So when Jesus said he would build his church on the rock, he was saying he would build his church on the word, and that word would start coming thorough Peter. Peter’s teachings would be the basis for people to hold onto as they grew in Christ. These teachings, of course, came from God, therefore building the Church on the “Rock”, which is what the name Peter stood for.

Matthew 7:24-27

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

Jesus has taught us that his word is the truth. With this word we will stand firm in his promise of eternal life in heaven. If you have made Jesus your center then you have already heard his words and put them into practice. But so many hear those words and do nothing. This is a death sentence. Not death in the world, although I wouldn’t think it would be worth living, but a death of the Spirit. The word of God is the “Bread of life”, it nourishes our souls and without nourishment everything dies. Without nourishment, your body becomes weak and unable to fight off infections. In the same way, without the word, your soul becomes weak and unable to fight off sin. Sin is an infection of the soul. The only cure is Jesus, and becoming more like him.

So if you are looking to grow in Christ, and add some stability in your life, go to God’s word. It is the first step after accepting Jesus as your center and nothing bad will ever come from it.
