Foundation of Discipleship 9 of 9

There are 9 parts to the foundation. Love, Faith, God’s Word, Prayer, Worship, Trust, Study, Action, and at the center is Jesus. Without the center, anything you would build on it would collapse in on itself. There are 4 corner stones that make it possible to build on and 4 side stones helping complete the foundation. All of these you must have, in order to be a successful disciple. The foundation looks like this:

God’s Word

Action is our last block in the foundation. I save it for last because it takes all the others to get you to the point of not only taking action but taking the right action. Action may be one of the most important things we do, but it’s the only one we do that we don’t do for ourselves at all. All the other blocks have points where we can do them or put them into place, specifically for ourselves. Action, on the other hand, has to be for others or it’s not for God. Action is the servant hood Jesus taught us.

Matthew 20:28

just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

John 13:13-17

13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Jesus didn’t wash their feet for his sake, even he was thinking of them as he did things. He washed their feet so that they would understand how to treat one another. He had already made the new commandment of “Love your neighbor as yourself” and this covers about half of the Ten Commandments. But no one was following those, for they didn’t have a good example of how to do this. Feet are the dirtiest part of your body, only servants would have had to wash their master’s feet. In doing this act Jesus showed that no man is above another, and we are all servants, therefore we should be helping one another be clean. This is only truly done by following God and accepting the forgiveness Jesus died for.

This block could have also been called Sharing, because that is what you do when you put God’s word into action. You share his word, his faithfulness, and his love. In doing so, you are bringing people to Christ and eternal life. At that point Christ cleans them by taking away their sins, thus the act of cleaning their feet.

We need to make sure we don’t confuse Action with tithing. Tithing is important thing to do in order to show gratitude to God for what he has given you, although I don’t think that is the only way you can do this, but you can not just throw money at something and think you have done your part. This is self gratifying and an insult to God. Yes, give money to help support things, but be involved to. Too many times we get in the habit of thinking, “I don’t have time for this, here is some money. That will shut them up”. It sounds bad, because it is, but that’s kind of the attitude some people have when it comes to helping out. Action doesn’t mean standing on the street corner preaching, although it does include it. Action is when you use your abilities to help win soles for God. If that means serving soup, or teaching a bible class, or just showing love to someone, you are getting out there to help. I know we are not going to be able to help on everything, we all have t earn a living as well, but Do all you can to bring people to God. Heaven will be a lonely place if you’re the only one in it.
